By Team JamBase Jul 19, 2013 5:30 pm PDT

UPDATE 7/20 1:45 p.m. PT: Phish will perform three sets on Saturday night to make up for the rain-shortened show and will be offering partial refunds to Friday ticket holders. Here’s what the band posted on their Official Facebook Page:

“Phish will perform three sets of music tonight (Saturday) on Northerly Island starting at 7:00PM sharp. The band must start promptly at 7:00PM to fit in three sets due to strict venue curfew. We’ve worked with the venue and local officials to extend the curfew for this evening’s performance to 11:30PM. Gates open at 5:30PM. Be sure to allow extra time to get into the venue. Please pass the message on to friends attending tonight’s show.

Due to the evacuation during the second set of last night’s show, we will be offering partial refunds to Friday ticket holders. We will send out more information regarding partial refunds as it becomes available.”

PHISH CHICAGO RUN OPENER CUT SHORT DUE TO WEATHER

This evening, Phish kicked off a three-night stand at FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago. The band had never played the recently renovated venue before tonight. Earlier this week, promoter Live Nation and FirstMerit Bank Pavilion staff addressed fan concerns that came in the wake of a rocky start to the venue’s season. However, Mother Nature had other ideas as a massive rainstorm led the band to cut short their second set 11 minutes in. Phish announced via social media that “Unfortunately, that’s it for the night. Again, the venue has been evacuated due to a storm that is approaching the area.”

The first set went off without incident. In an unusual move for the band, Phish has repeated a few songs from one show to the next on this tour. That trend continued with tonight’s “Suzy Greenberg” opener, which was played on Wednesday night in Alpharetta. As the set moved along, guitarist Trey Anastasio built his “Wolfman’s” solo to a sweltering peak that matched the intensity of the insanely hot weather at the venue, while “Backwards Down The Number Line” joined “Chalk Dust Torture” in the “5 Club” as the two most-played songs of the tour thus far. “It’s Ice” is another Phish original that has been a staple of setlists this run. After performing “It’s Ice” only once in 2012, this evening’s take marked the third of 2013. From there, “Moma Dance” (as with “Suzy,” “Moma” was performed at the last show Phish played) led into the tour debut of “My Soul.” Jon Fishman unveiled the newest tool in his arsenal, the Marimba Lumina midi controller, last Sunday night at Merriweather Post Pavilion during “Scent Of A Mule.” The drummer used the instrument again on “Scent” tonight. Both “46 Days” and “Limb By Limb” featured outstanding interplay between Anastasio and keyboardist Page McConnell. Speaking of Page, the New Jersey native took an opportunity after “Limb By Limb” to welcome the audience as he professed his love for The Windy City and noted that it was the band’s first time at the venue. McConnell’s speech was followed by a scorching “Julius” that closed out the first set.

Phish continues to be fond of opening second sets with “Down With Disease,” as the evening’s fourth song off 1994’s Hoist kicked off a closing stanza for the 26th time this era. Rain and thunderstorms moved in on Chicago during “Disease.” Just as Phish segued into “Prince Caspian” McConnell approached Anastasio and informed him that the fans needed to evacuate the venue due to the storm. Trey cut short “Caspian” a few lines into the song as Page explained the situation to the crowd. Phish then cleared the stage. About 30 minutes later the decision was made to “call it a night.” On Saturday afternoon, the band revealed they will play three sets on Saturday night and will offer partial refunds to Friday ticket holders.
